Jego rodzina ma rosyjskie, polskie i żydowskie korzenie. W wieku 16 lat dostał jako prezent urodzinowy gitarę, po czym skomponował pierwszą piosenkę. Neil Leslie Diamond (born January 24, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York) - singer, composer and lyricist of pop, rock, folk and country songs, as well as an occasional actor.
He has released 32 studio albums. His compositions were performed by, among others: Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Chris Isaac, Johnny Cash, Michael Ball or The Monkees. 39 of the songs he wrote were in the top ten of Billboard's Hot 100.
In 1984 he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and in 2011 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
His family has Russian, Polish and Jewish roots. At the age of 16, he received a guitar as a birthday present, after which he composed his first song. He attended Erasmus Hall High School, his classmate was the future actress and singer Barbra Streisand. He began unfinished medical studies at New York University.
He interrupted his studies after signing a contract with Sunbeam Music, and in 1966 he started cooperation with Bang Records and performed on the American Bandstand television program. In 1968 he moved to the West Coast, and two years later his single Cracklin' Rosie reached number one on the charts. Diamond was the best-selling singer in the United States at the time. In 1973, he signed a contract with Columbia Records. In the following years, he changed his style to a more pop one, which resulted in, among others, the songs You Don't Bring Me Flowers (recorded in 1978 with Barbra Streisand), September Morn, Love on the Rocks and Heartlight.
In 1980, he began his acting career with an appearance as the son of a Jewish chazan trying to make it in the music industry in the film The Jazz Singer. Despite unfavorable reviews, the film was a commercial success, and its song "America" achieved nationwide popularity after it was used by television stations to cover the return of hostages from Iran to their homeland. However, Diamond gave up further film career and his activity was limited to occasional appearances as himself.

In 1963, he married teacher Jaye Posner, his high school girlfriend. He has two daughters: Marjorie and Elyn, they separated in 1967. Two years later he married Marcia Murphey, with her they have sons named Jesse and Micah. Their relationship ended in the mid-1990s, after 25 years of marriage. Since 1996, he has been informally associated with Australian Rae Farley. In 2011, he announced his engagement to 41-year-old Katie McNeil, whom he married a year later.
