Joanna Chmielewska, właściwie Irena Barbara Kuhn z domu Becker (ur. 2 kwietnia 1932 r. w Warszawie, zm. 7 października 2013 r. w Warszawie, pochowana na warszawskich Powązkach) – pisarka, znana z powieści sensacyjnych i kryminalnych, komedii obyczajowych, a także książek dla dzieci i młodzieży, które przetłumaczone były na wiele języków.

Dzieciństwo spędziła w Grójcu i Warszawie. Już w młodości marzyła o napisaniu powieści. Rodzina chciała, żeby Joanna została lekarzem, jednak jeszcze w liceum zaczęła interesować ją architektura i ukończyła studia na Wydziale Architektury Politechniki Warszawskiej, uzyskując tytuł inżyniera architekta.

Jako pisarka debiutowała w 1958 na łamach czasopisma „Kultura i Życie”. Przez pewien czas pisała w „Kulturze i Sztuce” na tematy związane z architekturą wnętrz. W 1964 miał miejsce debiut książkowy, ukazała się jej sensacyjna powieść „Klin”.  Od 1970 zajmowała się wyłącznie twórczością literacką. Łączny nakład jej powieści w Polsce przekroczył 6 mln egzemplarzy, a w Rosji – gdzie uważana jest za najpoczytniejszą pisarkę zagraniczną – 8 mln. Jej książki tłumaczono na języki obce 107 razy.

Nieraz jak patrze na portrety znanych ludzi, w dziwnych pozach i miejscach, zastanawiam się czemu ma to służyć? Czy nie chodzi tylko o powierzchowne przyciągnięcie uwagi. Piszę to, gdyż moje zdjęcia Joanny Chmielewskiej, mogą właśnie tak wyglądać – w Kasynie w Marriottcie w Warszawie, przy ruletce 30 czerwca 1995 r. Zanim zrobiłem to zdjęcie, kilka razy spotkałem się z Joanną Chmielewską, myślę, że się polubiliśmy. Powiedziała mi, że lubi grać chazardowo w ruletkę. Zapytałem ją, czy możliwe byłoby zdjęcie w kasynie? Odpowiedziała – a dla czego nie? Zaczęłem załatwiać przy pomocy magazynu „Twój Styl” możliwość zdjęć w kasynie w Hotelu Marriott. Muszę powiedzieć, że nie było, to łatwe. Kiedy już znaleźliśmy się na miejscu, jeszcze przed otwarciem oficjalnym kasyna, wszystko już było gotowe do zdjęć. Pani Joanna poprosiła mnie na bok i mówi – to musi być prawdziwa gra, ja nie będę udawała, że gram. Tu zaczął się naprawdę wielki problem. Ale jak widzicie został przełamany, gdyż zdjęcia są. Nie o wszystkim można pisać, mam nadzieję, że to rozumiecie.

Kiedy już byliśmy w zaciszu domowym, zadałem jej kilka pytań.

—Czesław Czapliński: Pierwsze zapamiętane wspomnienie?

—Joanna Chmielewska: Ugryzłam aarona.

Nie był to starszy brat Mojżesza ani biskup krakowski z XI wieku, tylko roślina o wielkich liściach, podobnych nieco do liści kalii. Niewątpliwie trująca.

Nikt nie chce wierzyć, że pamiętam to wydarzenie, ponieważ miałam wtedy rok i dwa miesiące, ja jednakże do końca życia nie zapomnę przeraźliwego pieczenia w jamie ustnej i własnej wściekłości na dorosłą rodzinę. Chciałam mleka i tkwiła gdzieś we mnie pewność, że mleko mi pomoże, oni zaś latali dookoła z krzykiem, wykazując się głupotą zupełną i usiłując koić moje dzikie wrzaski sposobami niejako zewnętrznymi. Zdaje się, że bardziej się darłam ze złości niż z bólu.

W końcu tego mleka dostałam.

—Cz.Cz.: Niespełniona miłość?

—J.Ch.: Sama nie wiem. Niespełnionych miłości mam zatrzęsienie, ale na czoło tej konkurencji wysuwa się chyba miłość do morza.

Od dzieciństwa marzyłam o pływaniu po morzach i oceanach i wymyśliłam sobie nawet posadę lekarza okrętowego, w tym celu jednakże niezbędne było ukończenie Akademii Medycznej. Ten rodzaj studiów przekraczał moje siły. Pozostało mi zatem marzenie umiarkowane, nie grożące niczym obrzydliwym: mieszkać nad morzem. Tuż nad brzegiem. Widzieć morze przez okno, słyszeć szum, a także ryk, mieć tę ruchliwą wodę blisko, tuż przed nosem, w odległości najwyżej stu kroków.

Do dziś mi nie przeszło, ponieważ jestem optymistką i nigdy nie tracę nadziei.

Sometimes when I look at portraits of famous people, in strange poses and places, I wonder why it should be used? Is not just superficial attention. I write this because my photos of Joanna Chmielewska may look like this - in the Casino at the Marriott in Warsaw, at the roulette table on June 30, 1995. Before I took this photo, I met Joanna Chmielewska several times, I think we liked each other. She told me that she likes to play chazard roulette. I asked her if a casino photo would be possible? She answered - and why not? I started arranging the possibility of photos in the Marriott Hotel casino with the help of the "Twój Styl" magazine. I have to say it wasn't easy. When we got there, before the official opening of the casino, everything was ready for photos. Joanna asked me aside and says - it must be a real game, I will not pretend to play. This is where the really big problem started. But as you can see it has been broken because the pictures are there. You can't write about everything, I hope you understand that. When we were at home, I asked her a few questions.

—Czesław Czapliński: The first remembered memory?

—Joanna Chmielewska: I bit aaron. He was not the older brother of Moses or the bishop of Kraków from the 11th century, but a plant with large leaves, similar to leaves of calla. Undoubtedly poisonous. Nobody wants to believe that I remember this event because I was one and two months old at the time, but I will never forget the terrible burning sensation in my mouth and my own rage at an adult family. I wanted milk and there was a certainty in me somewhere that milk would help me, and they flew around screaming, showing complete stupidity and trying to soothe my wild screams in some way external. I seem to be more angry than pain. In the end I got this milk.

—CzC .: Unrequited love?

—J.Ch .: I don't know. I have a lot of unfulfilled love, but this competition probably comes to the forefront. From childhood, I dreamed of sailing in the seas and oceans and even thought of a job as a ship doctor, but for this purpose it was necessary to graduate from the Medical Academy. This type of study exceeded my strength. So I left a moderate dream, not threatening anything disgusting: to live by the sea. Right on the shore. See the sea through the window, hear the noise, as well as the roar, have this busy water close, right in front of your nose, within a maximum of one hundred paces. I haven't missed it to this day because I'm an optimist and I never lose hope.

—Cz, Th: What is transience?
