Diahann Carroll, born Carol Diahann Johnson (born July 17, 1935 in New York, died October 4, 2019 in Los Angeles) - actress and singer.
She made history as the first African American to win a theater Tony Award. As the heroine of the series Julia (1968), she received the Golden Globe for best newcomer. In 1975, she was nominated for an Academy Award for her leading role in the comedy-drama Claudine (1974). She played the role of the diva Dominique Deveraux - Blake Carrington's half-sister in the ABC soap opera Dynasty (1984–1987). In 1990, she received her own star on the Los Angeles Walk of Fame located at 7005 Hollywood Boulevard.
A year and a half after her birth in the Bronx, New York, her parents Frank Johnson and Mabel (née Faulk) moved to Harlem, New York, where, at the age of six, she sang in the gospel choir at morning services at the Abyssinian Baptist Church. At the age of ten she received a scholarship from the Metropolitan Opera. At the School of Performing Arts in Manhattan, her classmate was Billy Dee Williams. While attending the High School of Music and Art in New York, she worked in nightclubs. She studied sociology at New York University in Manhattan. She moonlighted as a model for Johnson Publications and Ebony Fashion Fair in Chicago, Illinois.
In 1953, she received a $3,000 prize and spent several weeks on the ABC game show Chance of a Lifetime, where she sang at the Latin Quarter nightclub. In 1954, she won Broadway audiences over in Harold Arlen and Truman Capote's musical House of Flowers as Ottilie. She then appeared on the cinema screen in Otto Preminger's musical drama Black Carmen (1954) opposite Harry Belafonte, the film version of Gershwin, Otto Preminger's musical melodrama Porgy and Bess (Porgy and Bess, 1959) with Sidney Poitier and Sammy Davis Jr. and the musical drama Paris Blues (1961) starring Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Louis Armstrong and Sidney Poitier.
In 1962, she was the first black woman to win a Tony Award for her role as Barbara Woodruff in the Richard Rodgers musical No Strings. She was nominated for an Emmy Award for her portrayal of Ruby Jay in an episode of the ABC series Naked City (1962). She was the first African American woman to win a Golden Globe Award and a Groundbreaking Show award for her portrayal of Nurse Julia Baker on the NBC series Julia (1968–1971), and was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1969. Her title role in the musical comedy-drama Claudine (1974) earned her an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination. She was the host of her CBS entertainment program Diahann Carroll Invites (The Diahann Carroll Show, 1976), where she hosted, among others, such celebrities as Merv Griffin, Johnny Carson and Judy Garland. In one episode of the ABC sitcom The Love Boat (1977), she played the role of thrice-divorced singer Roxy Blue.

In 1984, she joined the cast of the ABC soap opera Dynasty, in which she played the role of temperamental, wealthy chanson singer Dominique Deveraux (née Millie Cox), daughter of Tom Carrington and Laura Matthews, half-sister of Blake (John Forsythe) and Ben (Christopher Cazenove), with her costumes designed by Nolan Miller.

She was married four times. On February 26, 1956, she married Monte Kay (1956–1963), with whom she had a daughter, journalist Suzanne Ottilie Kay Bamford (born September 9, 1960). On January 14, 1963, she divorced. On February 21, 1973, she married Fredrick (Fredde) Jacek Glusman, and on July 20, 1973, they divorced. On May 25, 1975, she married for the third time with Robert DeLeon, who died on March 31, 1977. Almost ten years later, on January 3, 1987, she married the ballad singer Vic Damone, but this marriage lasted until September 12, 1996.
She also dated Sammy Davis Jr., actor Max Julien, American football player Jim Brown, Marlon Brando (1954), Sidney Poitier (1963–1965), actor Don Marshall (1969–1970), and journalist David Frost (for three years; 1970–1972).
In 1998, when she was 63, she was diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine mammogram, overcame the disease, and then publicly encouraged other women that "taking care of your health is in women's best interests, and knowing how to best take care of yourself gives you great strength."
She died on October 4, 2019 at her home in Los Angeles at the age of 84. The cause of death was breast cancer.
